What's Actually in the Bar: A Plain English Ingredient Walkthrough
Seven ingredients, one job each, and an honest answer to why some 'soap' on a shelf isn't soap at all.

Ingredient lists on soap and skincare are usually a wall of chemical names that mean nothing to the person reading them. Own It's bars keep the list short: saponified tallow, coconut oil, cocoa butter, castor oil, grapeseed oil, kaolin clay, Tussah silk, fragrance. Seven ingredients doing a job each is a very different thing to a wall of unfamiliar names, and it's worth knowing what each one is actually for before you decide whether it's worth the price of a bar.
What saponification actually is
Soap, in the true chemical sense, is the product of a reaction between a fat or oil and an alkali, usually sodium hydroxide, known as lye. That reaction is called saponification, and it converts the fat molecules into soap molecules and a natural byproduct called glycerin. 'Saponified tallow' on an ingredient list simply means the tallow has already fully reacted with the lye and is no longer lye in any form, it's soap. There's no free lye left in a properly made bar. This is also why true soap making is closer to chemistry than to mixing a lotion: get the ratio of fat to lye wrong and the bar either won't set or will be harsh on skin, so the recipe has to be calculated, not guessed at.
Why some 'soap' on a shelf isn't soap
A lot of what's sold as soap in a supermarket, particularly anything labelled a beauty bar or a body bar, is actually a syndet bar, short for synthetic detergent. These are built from manufactured cleansing agents rather than from saponified fats, and they're formulated to lather in a very specific, very consistent way at scale. That's not automatically a worse product, but it is a genuinely different one, chemically, to a true soap made through saponification. If a bar doesn't list an oil or fat as saponified, or lists cleansing agents with names ending in things like sulfate or sulfonate as the primary ingredients, it's a detergent bar wearing the word soap.
The base: saponified tallow
Tallow is a hard, dense fat, and it's the backbone fat in Own It's bars. A soap built mostly around a hard fat like tallow produces a firmer bar that holds its shape and its size for longer between washes than a bar built on soft oils alone. It's an old fat to build soap around, tallow-based bars have been made for centuries, precisely because it produces a stable, long-wearing result.
The bubbles: coconut oil and castor oil
Coconut oil and castor oil are both doing lather work, from two different angles. Coconut oil saponifies into a soap that produces big, fast, fluffy bubbles almost immediately, which is where a lot of the initial lather in the shower comes from. Castor oil doesn't produce as much volume on its own, but it helps stabilise the bubbles coconut oil creates, so instead of a thin foam that collapses in thirty seconds, you get a thicker, longer-lived lather that holds up for the length of a wash.
The cushion: cocoa butter and grapeseed oil
Cocoa butter and grapeseed oil are there for what happens to your skin during and after the wash, not for the lather itself. Cocoa butter is a heavy, rich fat that saponifies into a soap with a dense, almost lotion-like feel, leaving a cushioning layer that helps guard against the tight, dry feeling a harsher bar can leave behind. Grapeseed oil is lighter, and it rounds off that cushion without making the bar feel greasy, which matters because a fat that's too heavy can leave residue rather than a clean finish.
The finish: kaolin clay and Tussah silk
Kaolin clay and Tussah silk are both added for how the bar behaves right at the end of the wash and in the lather itself, not for cleansing. Kaolin is a fine, mild mineral clay, and it adds a gentle slip to the bar that helps it rinse away cleanly rather than leaving a filmy residue on skin. Tussah silk is worked into the lather itself, and it's what gives a bar its notably smooth, low-friction feel while lathering, rather than a grittier or thinner foam.

None of this is marketing language dressed up as science. It's the actual job each raw material is doing in the bar, and it's worth knowing before you decide whether a longer ingredient list from somewhere else is really doing more, or just listing more.
